We are all programmed to a very large degree by the voices we hear around us from our earliest years. They can be parental, friends or teachers at school. However, the voice that we listen to almost ceaselessly is our own. It is estimated that we think on average 60,000 thoughts per day - 95 per cent of them the same as the day before.
A self repeating pattern is established. Good if it is a positive, but commonly the case is that it is a negative voice that we will hear. "I can't do that", "I am stupid", "I should be able to do that" etc. etc. The list is endless.
Change your self talk. Start simply with the commonest of expressions. Instead of "I can't" use " I can (do some of this task etc)ŠŠ." See if you can find a positive way of framing these thoughts. Instead of "should, must or ought" use "I could do that or I will do that." The expression "I can't" confirms", yet again, our inability to achieve while "I should" emphasises guilt or failure if we did not do the task.
