One of the greater reactions to stress can be the development of a phobia- often agoraphobia -fear of being outdoors. Often the person will have a panic attack in a particular situation and then become frightened of going into that situation again. In fact, they are more frightened of the physical response rather than the situation itself.
Phobias can be dealt with in a number of ways. One of the best is to specify a goal, for instance deciding that you will walk to the town and back, and then break it down into achievable sections. (1) spending time in the garden (2) walking to the end of the street (3) walking to the local shop (4) walking to the edge of town (5) walking into town and out again (6) walking into town to visit a shop and return.
All of these steps can be taken with the support of another person and they need to be done daily. Then do them individually until totally confident to move to the next step. Set your own limits. Practise relaxation, breathing and visualisation techniques to support. Seek the support of a specialist trainer.
