People who may hold a low opinion of themselves may find it hard to accept compliments and may even try to turn them away when offered because they do not fit the current image held by that person.
"That's a very nice jumper."………… "What this! It was only cheap from Oxfam." Could be more usefully responded to as -"Thanks, I'm glad you like it. It was a bargain from Oxfam."
Compliments are gifts of recognition about ourselves from someone else. We would no sooner think of being given a birthday gift and then promptly handing it back so why do the same with a compliment. Practise giving compliments too. They are gifts and rewarding to give as well as receive.
