Relaxation

We tend to think of relaxation as either sitting in front of the TV, reading a book or having a beer. These are all enjoyable but true 'relaxation' means a method of actually changing our brain wave pattern from an active 'Beta' rhythm to a relaxed 'Alpha' state.

Beta is the pattern we use when working or concentrating such as watching television. High levels of Beta activity are often associated with high stress levels and found in migraine sufferers. Alpha patterns bring about changes in beta endorphin activity -brain chemistry which will help us feel, relaxed, calmer, have better sleep patterns and feel mentally lifted.

Alpha is encouraged by learning to release all muscle tension from the body and quietening the mind. A simple breathing and relaxation tape will help achieve this or nominate an 'alpha spot' (on a wall, an ornament or object) and keep your attention on this spot for one full minute without letting the thoughts become active. This will encourage alpha activity. More developed yoga or TM meditation techniques will also achieve this. Practise daily for maximum benefit.
