Antara Yoga Teacher Training Course
The course
The Antara Yoga teacher training course is based in North Wales and accredited with the Open College Network Wales and has been set up to fulfil two important functions.
The first being to provide a full hatha yoga teacher training for people living in Wales and the north west who may otherwise find the opportunity for further training limited without travelling many miles over a period of two or more years.
The second import aspect of the course will be the emphasis through the training syllabus on equipping students to become skilled and competent teachers and not just good yoga practitioners.
The Tutors
Geoff Powell, the lead yoga instructor was originally trained in the Iyengar technique over 30 years ago in London with Silva Mehta and BKS Iyengar. He has taught in North Wales since that time and has taught as a guest teacher in many areas of the UK and regularly runs residentials both in the UK and Europe. As a fully qualified complementary therapist in Applied Kinesiology, stress management and NLP he brings a wide breadth of knowledge to the role of training teachers. He is also a hatha yoga teacher trainer certificate holder.
Marian Birkett is a senior lecturer in physiotherapy at Sheffield Hallam University and has been practising Iyengar yoga since the 1970’s. She will be bringing her wide knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the course giving students a deep understanding of the physical principles and structure of the asanas through her own professional and personal experience..
Dr. Tim Woodman is a senior lecturer in sports psychology at the University of Wales, Bangor, and is currently sports psychologist to the UK women’s gymnastic team. He is also a fully qualified yoga teacher and is currently completing his training as a psychotherapist. His contribution to the course will be to develop the skills of self knowledge and confidence for students in their role as teachers together with the personality and language skills that contribute to the making of a skilled teacher.
The training
The course will run over a two-year period and will be divided into six training units. The starting point will be the autumn term and each module will require two complete weekends of training. The modules will match the academic year with a spring and summer term making three modules in each year. The course work will be assessed by written submission with final independent assessment.
The syllabus
The course will cover the basic asanas qualifying the student to teach to an intermediate level. The syllabus will cover basic breathing practises, anatomy & physiology, basic medical conditions, contra indications and corrections to yoga practise, teaching skills, lesson planning and –most importantly- peer group and open guided teaching sessions.
The syllabus will also cover the background to yoga including the Eight Limbs of Yoga, chakras and subtle energy systems, basic nutrition and knowledge of stress and its effects.
Fees
There will be an initial registration fee of £100 covering administration costs and subsequent training weekends are paid for as they occur. Full details of current rates will be sent on application.
